So there was a new study written up this past week, supplying evidence that young people in America are rejecting Christianity because they see it as “hypocritical, judgmental, and anti-gay.”
The vast majority of non-Christians — 91% — said Christianity had an anti-gay image, followed by 87% who said it was judgmental and 85% who said […]

Eric Alterman has an outstanding column in The Nation on how the media’s mean girls (of all genders) develop the narratives they use to bring down the presidential candidates they take a dislike to. With examples of what they did to Gore in 2000, and what they’re doing to Obama and Edwards right now.
Two of […]

General Petraeus says that “victory” in Iraq will require 9-10 more years. I’m trying to imagine how ten more years of bloody occupation can possibly work out to a victory. More on that subject here.
A bill has been introduced in Venezuela to restrict baby names to a list of 100 approved choices. “The bill’s ambition, […]

Good Morning, Day 51
Posted by Ocelopotamus on September 6th, 2007 at 11:21 am
1,850 U.S. citizens were recently killed in an entirely preventable disaster.
It’s been a while since I’ve updated this record — 37 days, to be exact. On July 18 I started keeping count of the 50 U.S. citizens who die every day because they can’t afford health care, according to this statistic.
So in a little […]

Good Morning, Day 7
Posted by Ocelopotamus on July 24th, 2007 at 11:45 am
About 50 Americans have died since yesterday because they couldn’t afford health care.
That brings the total to 350 people who have died thanks to our profit-focused health care system just since I started keeping this count, six days ago.
If 350 US citizens had died in a plane crash this week, we’d be hearing about it […]

Good Morning, Day 6
Posted by Ocelopotamus on July 23rd, 2007 at 4:52 am
About 300 Americans have died because they couldn’t afford health care since I started this count five days ago.
About 50 more will die today.
Since this is turning into a kind of daily witness, I suppose I should document my source for the statistic this is based on.
Michael Moore says in Sicko, and he […]

Good Morning, Day 5
Posted by Ocelopotamus on July 22nd, 2007 at 5:22 am
Since I last updated this count, on Friday, about 100 more people have died in the United States because they couldn’t afford health care.
That makes about 250 Americans who were allowed to die because they couldn’t pay for treatment, just since I started this count four days ago.
About 50 more will die today.

Good Morning, Day 3
Posted by Ocelopotamus on July 20th, 2007 at 5:18 am
Since I started this count two days ago, about 150 people have died here in the US because they couldn’t afford health care.
That’s enough people to fill, what, three or four CTA buses?
About 50 more will die today.

Good Morning, Day 2
Posted by Ocelopotamus on July 19th, 2007 at 5:27 am
About 50 more people died yesterday, here in the United States of America, because they couldn’t afford health care.
That means that about 100 Americans have died due to lack of affordable health care since I started this tally yesterday.
About 50 more will die today.

Update: Internet Radio Gets a Reprieve
Posted by Ocelopotamus on July 13th, 2007 at 11:16 am
For those who’ve been following the “Internet Radio Is in Danger of Being Shut Down Forever” story (background here), there’s some good news.
According to Wired News, as a result of the massive outcry Congress heard from listeners, SoundExchange is backing away from the draconic royalty rate structure that would have put Internet radio out of […]

Liking Norma Rae
Posted by Ocelopotamus on July 10th, 2007 at 2:24 pm
After reading this piece, which originally ran in The Nation, I bumped Norma Rae up on my Netflix queue and was very glad I did. I was really too young for it when it came out in 1979, and had somehow never gotten around to renting it in the years since.
And seeing Norma Rae now […]

John Conyers tells it like it T-I-Is: Conyers says Bush spared Libby from jail to keep him from singing. This is patently obvious to just about everyone, but of course the White House immediately called the charge “ridiculous and baseless.” Which allows it to join the distinguished list of other ideas the administration considers “ridiculous […]

Save Internet Radio Campaign Update — Day of Silence Tuesday, June 26
Posted by Ocelopotamus on June 25th, 2007 at 4:36 am
July 15 is “the day the music dies” — the date that Internet radio will be essentially destroyed by new draconic royalty fees approved by the Copyright Royalties Board if Congress doesn’t take action to fix the situation.
The exorbitant new rates force stations to pay a fixed fee for every song they play, regardless of […]
